Gulf State Business

Welcome to Gulf State-Business

Gulf State - Business is the official website of "Re-Negotiating the Social Contract in the GCC: State-Business Relations and Reforms in the Oil-Rentier Gulf Monarchies", a three-year research project funded by the Economic and Social Research Council.

Beginning in October 2012, Re-Negotiating the Social Contract in the GCC will run until December 2015. The project is led by Dr. Marc Valeri of the Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies, University of Exeter and Prof. Gerd Nonneman of Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service in Qatar.

The project aims to explore the evolution and position of the business elites in the six GCC monarchies, their relations with 'state' and regime, and their perceptions of – and roles in – policy-making and policies implemented in the Gulf. By the same token, it investigates the impact of these policies on state-business relations and the composition of the business communities.

Gulf State Business website is designed as a tool for information and communication, in order to disseminate data and analysis from the project, and engage with academic, policy and corporate audiences. In addition to contributions by the research team and project outputs and information on the project’s activities, it is a platform to provide information on the state-business relationship and economic policies in the Gulf monarchies.
